INEC De-Registers Political Parties, Gives Reasons

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday announced the de-registration of political parties in Nigeria. This was made known in a Press briefing at the Commission’s Conference Hall INEC Headquarters Abuja by Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

INEC said the de-Registered political, Parties 75 in number, did not satisfy the requirements of the Fourth Alteration to the Constitution. it said however, one of the political parties, the APP filed a suit in court and obtained an order restraining the Commission from de-registering it.

This brings the number of registered political parties to 18 from the previous 96.

The commission also released the timetable for Edo and Ondo states 2020 governorship elections to be held 19 September and 10 October 2020 respectively.
